As a vital everyday communications and multi-media tool, there are few gadgets that can beat the iPhone for number of applications, portability, and convenience of use. As such, the importance of keeping an iPhone protected from potential damage whilst out and about is a priority most iPhone owners feel cannot be overestimated. Many iPhone owners have therefore wisely invested in protective iPhone cases.

There are several different kinds of iPhone case. Firstly, there are iPhone cases that have a solid construction. Made from tough but lightweight materials such as polycarbonate, these hard iPhone cases offer the greatest level of damage protection, helping to prevent any breakages occurring should the iPhone be dropped or subjected to violent knocks and collisions. Hard iPhone cases are therefore often highly recommended for use by children, commuters, sports participants, and anybody likely to be involved in high levels of physical activity.

In addition, hard iPhone cases almost always include cut-outs that permit complete access to all operating switches, buttons and portals; including a protruding protective edge that juts out and surrounds the main screen rather than completely masking it.

It should also be noted that hard cases can, if needed, usually be easily removed by simply using a coin to prise the two casing halves apart.

Skin cases on the other hand fit extremely closely around the iPhone, thereby enabling the user to continue to benefit from the iPhone’s slim, unobtrusive shape when carrying it about the person. Made from flexible materials such as silicon, skin cases will greatly help safeguard against scratches and abrasions, although may be less effective than hard cases against heavy duty impact.

A slightly more sophisticated-looking type of iPhone case is that of the flip lid variety. Flip lid iPhone cases can be made from a variety of materials including leather, polycarbonate, or a combination of the two applied as separate layers. Access to the screen controls are made available simply by raising the hinge-like lid.

Due to the versatility of the iPhone, cases are now produced in the form of armbands. With the iPhone securely attached to the arm, the owner is then free to participate in energetic activities such as jogging.

Regardless of the type of iPhone case chosen, selection is often also based on aesthetic grounds. Different design touches can confer on each iPhone case a distinctive identity. Such designs can range from single bright fluorescent colours through to designer motifs, or even well-known emblems such as national flags.

At the opposite extreme, transparent iPhone cases can be chosen because they specifically deflect from the fact that a protective casing is being used at all. This can be because the owner is proud to demonstrate that they are in possession of an iPhone; or because the owner already owns a distinctive limited edition iPhone design and wishes to show this off.
