A Glass of Water Can Help You Lower Your Fuel Costs

Posted by: Robert Allen , February 11, 2011

Cars driven by liquid hydrogen and oxygen are still in experimental stages, and are not likely to become mainstream vehicles any time soon.  So you would be forgiven for expressing disbelief if anybody tells you that a glass of water can help you cut down on how much you spend on gasoline every month.  But believe it, a new iPhone app designed by Toyota, aptly named ‘A Glass of Water’, has been made to ensure iPhone users drive their cars with less fuel.

Sound incredible?  The app displays the picture of a glass full of water on the screen when it runs.  As you drive the car faster, the phone shakes slightly, and this is detected by the app.  If the shaking is too hard, some water is considered to have spilled out of the glass. At the end of the day, the app shows you a calculation of how much water you have spilled.

This can give you an idea of how much fuel you could have saved if you had not driven as fast.  For instance, if you had accelerated suddenly to get past an intersection before the traffic lights turned red, then you might have spent a tad more fuel than you would have under normal driving conditions.  In the beginning, this may not seem like much, but in the long run, this can potentially increase your expenditure on fuel by as much as 10% (yes, that’s the percentage by which the app can cut down your fuel costs every month).

However, the spokesperson from Toyota, present at the time of the launch, made it quite clear that the app was not meant to force people to drive slowly even when in a hurry.  Instead, the app is meant to inspire them to drive slowly and cut down on fuel costs when they are out on a cruise with family and friends.  That, the spokesperson explained, is the time when even some cautious users let down their guards and stomp on the gas pedal.  The result is mounting fuel costs, which is often only realized at the end of the month.

The app is obviously useful for people who drive regular town cars and SUVs, but be aware that if you are driving a car like a Prius, you may not benefit much from the app, since this car only runs on battery power when you are driving around the city. On highways, the app will still help you cut down on fuel costs and help you trim down your monthly budget just a little bit more.
