Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries have captured the largest share of the overall advanced batteries market. These batteries are currently in large-scale commercial production for use in high-volume consumer electronic products such as laptop computers and mobile phones.

GBI Research estimates that the portable electronics segment contributes 92% to the overall advanced batteries market. Li-ion batteries accounted for 84% of the global advanced batteries market in the portable electronics segment in 2009, while the remaining 16% is dominated by Nickel Metal (Ni-MH) and Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries. Li-ion batteries continue to be the dominant ThinkPad R60 battery chemistry in the portable electronic segment and are expected to grow at a CAGR of 15.7% during the forecast period 2010-2020. The market share of advanced batteries by battery chemistry for the year 2009 is depicted in the figure below:

And it’s not just the iPad. Google Chrome OS tablets won’t run Intel either, because the divide between ARM and Intel is not narrowing. In fact, Netbooks may even ditch Atom in favor of ARM processors (Windows bloat may prevent this). Google wants this to happen with its cloud initiatives running on Chrome OS.

We upgraded the system to Windows 7 Ultimate N and found it was a simple migration that needed just two driver updates (for Ethernet and Wi-Fi) to get up and running. Turn it into a media server. Even if the processor and RAM is a little on the lower side, a nicely-sized hard drive can take the load off of your desktop when it comes to transcoding video and serving it back out.Pair that Mini up with an iSight camera and combine ‘em into the creepy telepresence robot of your dreams! (or nightmares)

But if you’re looking for a durable netbook for use on business trips or in a classroom environment and don’t care about the fact that virtually all Intel Atom powered netbooks are pretty much the same in terms of performance, then the HP(HP dv8000 Battery) Mini 5102 might be worth a look. While it’s aimed at consumers, the HP Mini 5102 is available for anyone to purchase from the HP Small Business web site.

If you are hoping to plug the Presario CQ61-420us into a HDTV or digital monitor via HDMI you are out of luck. The system has what looks like a port on the side but it is just a blank for use with higher grade models that use the same shell. The system also has only three USB 2.0 ports making peripheral compatibility a bit more troublesome than the average budget laptop.

You can get iWork for iPad apps (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote) to export files inMicrosoft Office-compatible formats for ten bucks each, and “create Office-compatible docs on the go with the iPad,” Bradley says, warning that even there, “if you’re out and about and suddenly need to edit a doc that you didn’t have the foresight to sync to the iPad, you’re more or less out of luck.”

Assuming you manage to get that far, you still have to navigate most notebooks and netbooks using a touchpad of some sort, or resort to an external mouse–not very practical given the lack of space to work with. The touchscreen interface of the iPad, combined with the slim, flat-panel design, make it ideal for working in the cramped spaces on an airplane and intuitively navigating through the OS.
