How to Fix the Most Common iPhone Problems

Posted by: Robert Allen , January 23, 2011

It’s no question that the Apple iPhone is probably the most versatile, most feature-rich and most practical mobile phone in the world. Its huge amount of global sales is proof of that. But while the well-loved Apple iPhone is definitely a joy to have and to use, it can run into a couple of problems now and then. But instead of spending your allowance or your month’s paycheck on iPhone repairs, consider fixing these iPhone problems yourself. We’ll get you on the right track (and help you save money, besides) by listing down the most common iPhone problems and enumerating the steps on how to fix them.

1. iPhone battery won’t charge. Some people report of that their iPhones won’t charge even after connecting them to their computer’s USB ports. If you are experiencing this problem, don’t panic. If you have drained the battery of your Apple iPhone, chances are, plugging it into the USB port of your Mac or PC won’t do any good; since most common USB ports can’t give your iPhone enough power or juice. Try plugging your iPhone into a wall outlet instead. This should be able to charge your iPhone.

2. Fixing a frozen iPhone. It can happen to all Apple iPhone users and is one of the most common iPhone problems experienced in the world. There are two ways to remedy this. One is to press and hold down the Home button, which is located at the front of your iPhone, for 5 to 10 seconds. Your iPhone should shut down the frozen application and bring you back to the main menu. If this doesn’t work, you can reset your iPhone by pressing the Home and Sleep/Wake button at the same time for about 10 seconds. If both remedies don’t work, you can try to connect your Apple iPhone to your computer, then launch iTunes. Go to Summary and then click on the “Restore” button. Your iPhone will be restored to its factory settings. Only use this as a last option, since restoring your iPhone will also erase all the content in it.

3. Poor or slow performance. Sometimes, you might experience sluggishness in your Apple iPhone. It might take too long to launch applications or to go from one window to the next. This happens for the same reason that your laptop starts running slower than usual—so many different applications start hogging its memory. To remedy this, you just have to restart or reboot your iPhone regularly. To restart, hold the power button and the home button for about ten seconds; then turn off your iPhone. Hold the power button for about 2 seconds to restart your iPhone. Do this every week, for maintenance. You should also try to empty Safari’s cache by going to Safari, then Settings, then clicking on “clear cache.”

4. Your Apple iPhone won’t recognize your SIM card. This can happen, even if you are using your Apple iPhone with the proper telecommunications provider. When this happens, take out your SIM card and wipe it gently with a soft cloth. Reinsert it again, making sure that it is free from dust or debris. If your iPhone still fails to recognize your SIM card, try restoring your iPhone using the steps outlined in number 2.

5. Unknown error (-50). Some people have reported that this unknown error is also one of the most common iPhone problems encountered. This can happen when you try syncing from iPhoto to an iPhone 3GS. It is reported that you have to upgrade to the latest version of iTunes to solve this problem.

Having iPhone problems? Don’t panic. The tips above can help you fix and remedy the most common iPhone problems by yourself.
