The LittleBig Debate: Should Sony Have Delayed?

Posted by: Esmeralda Lara , October 20, 2008

By now everyone has heard that LittleBigPlanet has been delayed due to a song included in the game that contained passages from the Quran and would possibly be offensive. While many in the gaming world were upset with the decisions to delay the game, the reason for being upset has varied immensely. Some gamers find it ridiculous to delay a game for something that “may” be offensive while others felt that the right thing to do was to recall the game and make sure it’s not met with negative press. The question is then, what was the best move to make?

LittleBigPlanet is quite possibly one of the most if not the most anticipated game of this year, and with the ability for users to create content, offensive material is more than likely going to find it’s way into the game. Take for example the World Trade Center Attack level that has already been created in Little Big Planet (Which I will not link to because I found it to be tasteless). Fallic material has been found in game already as well. Why does one passage of a holy book make a difference in light of the other material? The answer is simple, users don’t get sued for their content. Certain gamers have mentioned that other games read religious books or mock them in game, but failed to notice that intended offenses are just that, intended. LBP is intended to be rated E, as in for everyone which becomes difficult to accomplish with religious overtones being formulated.

Others have argued that no one will understand the phrase or it’s meaning anyway which has obviously been proven false by the simple fact that the delay even happened. Many others would have caught this oversight and demanded action.

For those reasons, this gamer believes the best course of action was to delay LBP, get the issue fixed and return it to the field untainted. While I’m not happy about waiting an additional week (No one is, but it’s just one week), I’d prefer that to having the alternative drama ensuing over a game that is supposed to be just plain fun.

Where do you stand gamers?  Did Sony do the right thing or offend more gamers by delaying?  Leave your thoughts you know where!
