How To Set Up iPhone Exchange ActiveSync

iPhone 3G Exchange Setup: Why is it so difficult?

There are so many posts on the Internet claiming how easy it is to setup an iPhone 3G to your Microsoft Exchange 2003 / Microsoft Exchange 2007 server.

After running through these steps, if you are still having troubles, contact our Technical Support Line at 480-440-4650 or Skype:  TECHNOKOZ. We charge a FLAT Rate FEE to guarantee the Sync of your iPhone to your Exchange Server. …and remember NO SYNC, no payment!

Google Answers gone wrong!

Here is a sample of the junk on google right now for this iPhone Exchange Setup problem:

Reset the IIS Admin password for the Default Web site. :    Would you like about 2 hours of a repair headache getting your OWA back to working condition? Yes, this suggestion is a REAL show stopper. Avoid it at all cost

Change the Server’s Domain name to match certificate name. This idea creates major METABASE security corruption.  Not sure of the intentions.  Any event, it will create LONGTERM headaches for your organization.
Change the Server’s Computer name. Just like idea number 2.  More trouble.

Here the Quick TechnoKOZ iPhone Exchange Setup Guide:
Microsoft Exchange 2003 has Service Pack 2 Installed
Test IIS (Internet Information Server) components for proper connectivity
Configure iPhone to your Exchange Server
Microsoft Exchange 2003 SP2

It is true, Windows 2003 automatic updates does not include the Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 update, which is necessary for the iPhone to communicate to the Exchange Server.  Here are the steps to determine if service pack 2 is installed:

Open your Microsoft Exchange System Manager
Expand Servers
Properties of Server
Check to see if you see Build 7638.2: Service Pack 2

If you do not, install Exchange Service Pack 2

Test IIS 6.0: OMA, Exchange components
Open your browser and type:   http://iphone-exchange-setup-ipaddressofserver/OMA (Outlook Mobile Access)
Open your browser and type:  http://iphone-exchange-setup- ipaddressofserver/Exchange (Exchange Web)

Both should connect without any error messages.

Setup iPhone to your Exchange Server

There only FOUR components that are typically necessary for a proper exchange – iPhone setup

Email Address
Exchange User Id
Exchange Password
Server Address (Also known as Outlook Web Address)

You typically do not need the DOMAIN name for most environments.  We are looking for EXCHANGE ACCOUNT VERIFIED message.  If you receive the message, VERIFICATION FAILED – this is a bad message.  Something is missing or is wrong.

Common iPhone Exchange myths
iPhone Setup Suggestions to avoid
Install Configure Outlook Anywhere within IIS / Exchange. [FALSE]  RPC/HTTP : You will view this suggestion all the time on google.  Great way to connect your Outlook 2007/2003 clients to your server, but has nothing to do with ActiveSync.
IMAP Port 143, 993 open on firewall. [FALSE] Old school.  You want Activesync working.  These ports are not necessary for Activesync.  Activesync works over TCP port 443   [you only need one port open on the firewall]
Goddady, Verisign, etc. Certificate (Fully Qualified SSL Cert). [FALSE] A simple unsigned and unverified certificate is fine.  Save yourself some time, money, and frustration.  Go with a simple certificate.  If you want a valid certificate, opt for the Godaddy .00 special.  Google:   “Godaddy SSL”  you will see a Godaddy adword at the top advertising a .00 certificate.
Install the certificate on the iPhone. [FALSE] You do not need to install any certificates on the phone.  Save time!!  Don’t do it.  It will not improve your chances to sync. This will make the situation worse.  Don’t do it.
You need to update your iPhone to the latest firmware. [FALSE] If your Windows 2003 Exchange server is configured correctly, your iPhone will connect correctly.
Need AT&T Business Data Plan for Exchange to Sync. [FALSE] Again, save your money.  I am not sure why AT&T has this ploy.  Their regular data plan works fine with Exchange.
Resetting the IPHONE to factory defaults. [FALSE] Have not seen many times where a factory reset fixed a sync issue.
Exchange 2003 Does not Support iPhone. [FALSE] Nice try!  But the iPhone 2.0, 2.2, 3.0, 3.1 works perfectly with Microsoft Exchange  2003 Server.
Don’t let your iPhone Sync issues RUN YOU AGROUND!
