Luxury on your Wrist

Posted by: Robert Allen , January 23, 2011

Soon after Bvlgari engulfed the brand Gerald Genta, it took most of the brand’s contemporary timepieces. They took existing designs and reshaped them a bit to bit Bulgari’s DNA. I was impressed they decided the Grande Sonnerie Tourbillon should be kept alive. They barely made any changes to it at all actually. I first wrote about this watch when it was called the Gerald Genta Arena Metasonic Sonnerie. Renamed the Bvlgari Gerald Genta Magsonic Grande Sonnerie Tourbillon, the watch seems to only change the case material, and the text on the ring around the dial.

As the watch is so complex with its tourbillon and sophisticated chiming functions, Bulgari created an iPad app that explains the watch. An incredible piece, this was originally retailed for 0,000.

Jaeger-LeCoultre is celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Reverso in 2011. One of the major initiatives, to put in one place the history and the nostalgia related to the classic time piece for the world to see, is the launch of the Reverso Virtual Museum. In the last eighty years Reverso has made its way to the wrists and hearts of royalty, soldiers, and young girls alike.

Reverso has been known and loved for its unique design which is stylish and aesthetic and has always been backed by quality craftsmanship. The Virtual Museum gives the Reverso owners the opportunity to share and immortalize their bond and connection with their beloved watch. This unique concept allows Reverso owners to share their story and will welcome them into an elite group of legendary people who have loved and personalized their very own Reversos.

The owners wanting to share their story must register and the Virtual Museum curator will display the watch, and its story, in one of the many exhibition rooms, making it a part of the rich Jaeger-LeCoultre history.

Bob, a retired Navy Doctor wasn’t exactly featured in the Hall of Fame but had something which watch enthusiasts would trade their life for- The Rare Rolex Submariner Ref 5510 that featured in a series of Bond movies like Dr. No, Goldfinger, and Thunderball.

In few days the price touched ,000 and was finally auctioned for a whopping ,100. The owner had bought this watch 52 years ago at a Navy Exchange on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands for just .

When Bob was unaware of the watch’s significance, he thought the roof-top-piercing prices are a system glitch. It was that’s when he asked his son to do research and they finally discovered what they had on their hands. Well, this was a good opportunity to save money and own a Bond heritage watch for the new timepiece is being retailed for as much as 0,000.

The ostentatiousness makes it look ugly, but the effort to become ugly needs a lot of art, and that makes the watch beautiful. The minute hand is set in the C#. The hour hand is set in the “A”. The watch is an example f how crazy the French can really get, when it comes to manufacturing something luxurious. Or perhaps, it is a snide remark to the precision perfect watches made in the neighbourly Switzerland.

The watch case is about 50mm wide and is made of 18k rose and gray gold. Thanks to the 3 sapphires and 60 pieces of jewels, one could be sure that the watch glows and gleams through all occasions. There is also the veneered wooden box that comes along with the watch, and it is inspired by the Bastille Opera House in Paris.
