The IPad As a Gaming Device

Posted by: Robert Allen , January 6, 2011

iPad as a Gaming Device

Apples iPad is opening up a world of new possibilities in the computing and technological world. While tablets have been released in the past (think Microsoft or even Apple’s Newton years ago), the iPad brings tablet computing to new heights. The iPad will be capable of nearly everything that you would want to do with a basic computer: write, read, surf the web, listen to music, and play games.

The latter of these capabilities is grabbing the attention of possible iPad app developers. While the iPad may seem like a great gaming device in one sense, it may have some flaws. Well look at the iPad as a gaming device to understand what to expect, both good and bad.

Positives

The iPad makes for a new an innovative way to enjoy games. iPad app development teams will find that they can do more with games than they ever could with the iPhone. iPad app developers will continue to incorporate touch screen functions into their games, making them more interesting and more immersive.

The iPad also has the right hardware to make it more conducive to gaming. The iPad features the 1GHz Apple A4 CPU system, giving more power to overall function. Games will have more processing power, giving developers more options as they create the next generation of games or upgrade their original games.

The iPad also has the ability of the gaming found on iPhones. The clear and improving graphics are allowing some major games to try their own versions for the iPhone and iPad. You can easily turn your touch screen into a controller to turn, manipulate, and move characters. Any necessary buttons are simply shown on screen, allowing each individual game to have unique buttons.

Negatives

One of the major negatives of the iPad as a gaming device comes from the unknown. We simply do not know what to expect from this new piece of technology. iPad app developers will still be trying to figure out what they can do with the iPad well into its release.

As of now, the iPad will be limited in what it can do, as far as games are concerned. While it a perfect device for those who are looking for casual games, it is not a device that users will purchase specifically for gaming. The iPad can offer a fun way to enjoy different games, however, and should not be overlooked as a mid-range gaming device.

It is important to understand that these assertions are based on the information that we have for the iPad. We will not be able to fully understand the scope of the iPad as a gaming device until iPad application development is in full swing. After games have been played on the iPad, and developers understand how much they can do with the product, we will be able to better understand what the iPad can do for gamers.

Jordan Ianelli has been an iPad App Developer and an iPhone App Developer ever since Apple announced the release of the SDK in 2008. Jordan is currently working with iPad Application Developers for his first iPad app launch.
