To Buy or Not to Buy an Apple iPad

Posted by: Robert Allen , February 6, 2011

Bigger than an iPhone, smaller than a Macbook, the launch of the Apple iPad sure had people’s interest aroused. Measuring 9.7 inches diagonally (1024 x 768 pixels) and having 16 Gb to 64 Gb flash drive, what could a gadget like this possibly give that Apple’s line of products hasn’t offered yet?

To know whether the Apple iPad is a good buy or not, especially with current Apple owners, given below are its specifications:

Display: 9.7 in (25 cm) diagonal display (1024×768 pixels)
Thickness: 0.5 in (13.4 mm)

Weight: 1.5 lbs

Capacity: 16GB to 64GB Flash Drive
Processor: 1GHz Apple A4 Chip
Battery Life: 10 hours battery life

Other Features: Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi 802.11n, 3G optional (needs micro-SIM)

Display

With 9.7 inches LCD display, the Apple iPad is almost thrice the size of the Apple iPhone making it more eye-friendly in watching movies, browsing the web, and reading ebooks. This makes it a more attractive choice for avid movie watchers and readers who just likes to watch movies or read ebooks to go, without the phone capability. Aside from this, the iPad is also designed to be controlled using the fingertips with its multi-touch feature and can be viewed in four orientations, namely, landscape-right, landscape-left, portrait, and upside down.

Thickness and Weight

Although an Apple iPad wouldn’t fit inside a pocket, the way an Apple iPhone does, it is surely thinner than a Macbook measuring only 0.5 inches. This is even slimmer than the Macbok Air which has a thickness of 0.76 inches. The iPad, weighing at 1.5 pounds, it is also lighter than most laptops making it more convenient to carry around.

Capacity

The maximum storage capacity offered by the Apple iPad is 64GB. This is way smaller than what laptops nowadays offer which means you cannot place as many videos, pictures, and songs to an Apple iPad than to a laptop.

Processor

More than the iPad itself, tech savvy people are excited over the launching of Apple’s very own CPU, the 1GHz Apple A4 chip. The chip which powers the Apple iPad is the one responsible for the gadget’s boasted 10-hour battery life while playing HD videos.

Battery Life

As mentioned earlier, the Apple iPad has a 10-hour battery life if used to play high definition movies. With regards to playing music, meanwhile, the iPad can sustain up to 140 hours audio playback before requiring a full battery charge.

Apple iPad’s battery is made of lithium-ion polymer and is non user-replaceable. Apple’s battery replacement service on the iPad consists of replacing the iPad unit itself for a service fee of , provided that the unit is not damaged.

Other Features

As with other modern device, the Apple iPad comes with bluetooth 2.1, WiFi 802.11n, and 3G capability. Bluetooth enables the iPad to transfer files securely without the use of cables. The inclusion of Wifi technology, meanwhile, makes it possible for the Apple iPad to connect to the internet as long as it is within a wireless network. Aside from these, the Apple iPad is also equipped with 3G feature so users can use 3G network if they opt to. They only have to buy the newly introduced SIM, the micro-SIM, and insert in iPad.

So is the Apple iPad worth the money? The answer is yes if the user’s primary concern is watching movies, surfing the web, and reading ebooks comfortably while on the go. Otherwise no because it is certainly not a phone and users who are big on using applications such as image and / or video editing may find it difficult to find applications for those tasks.
