Ipad top 5: augmented reality apps

Posted by: Robert Allen , February 23, 2011

Thanks to the technology behind certain apps for the iPhone and iPad, users are able to experience the wonders of augmented reality. This technological innovation adds information to what each of us perceives in everyday life. It has been described as one of the next big evolutions in terms of Internet applications. A handful of augmented reality apps are already on the market for interested users who want to be on the cutting edge of this new innovation. The best five of these apps have taken the creative visions behind the original Apple Mac and applied them to this new way of seeing the world.

Spyglass

This iPhone app is one of the leading ones for augmented reality navigation. Using a camera that records current surroundings, real-time information appears in front of whatever the iPhone happens to be facing. This type of information includes GPS location, compass bearings, and different distance measurements based on the user’s current location. This augmented reality app is especially attractive to users who enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and camping. Urban dwellers and tourists have also found this app helpful in locating the nearest tube station or famous landmark.

Pocket Universe

This app is now available for both the iPhone and iPad; it is the perfect way for astronomy enthusiasts to strengthen their knowledge of stars and constellations. Pocket Universe is designed with an automatic sensor for noted landmarks in the night sky that are directly overhead at any given time and place. The new iPad version of this app includes additional features that work best with the larger screen, and it has been noted as one of the best for its lower price when it comes to cheap iPad deals for apps.

Robotvision

The focus of this option is on the user’s immediate surroundings, particularly concerning address locations. First-time visitors to certain cities find this out helpful in locating the nearest restaurant, museums, and other points of interest. The big selling point of this app is that it includes input and reviews from other Robotvision users, otherwise known as geo-tagging.

Cyclopedia

This app has harnessed the collective knowledge from Wikipedia and made it available as part of augmented reality. Users who simply aim their iPhone or iPad’s camera at a specific object or historical place will receive instant background information in real time. The app also connects to Flickr, the popular photo sharing site that shares any available pictures of the same subject that other users have posted.

London Tube

Commuters travelling throughout London on a daily basis will find this app especially useful. From any point throughout the city, users can receive information on the nearest tube stations as well as the exact walking distance to reach them. It also includes detailed maps of all lines of the London underground.
